BIOGRAPHY of NYAKANYAKA
Mondli "Nyakanyaka" Dlamini was born and bred at KwaMashu, one of Durban's former roughest and most notorious townships.
When he was growing up, he was a skillful midfielder-cum-goal poacher. His teammates then named him after a former Amazulu and Bafana Bafana 's engineroom Joseph "Nyakanyaka" Mlaba. He passionately fell in love with music while he was doing Grade 10 at the Eastbury Secondary in Phoenix.
In 1995, Nyakanyaka formed a hip hop outfit Strikers along with two childhood
friends. Unfortunately, one member passed away and the group disbanded. However, Nyakanyaka never gave up on his childhood dream. He formed another hip hop group called Outcome in the following year.
Having passed his matriculation with the flying colours in the same year, his mother wanted him to study in any reputable tertiary institution. Instead of following his mother's instruction to the latter, Nyakanyaka and three friends formed a kwaito group called Kasi and entered a music competition held at the Obsession night club in Durban. Luckily, they won it and then given a chance to curtain-raised for a nationally-acclaimed kwaito artist Thebe.
In 2000, afro- jazz muso Fundile Mdingi introduced Kasi to one of the renowned producers in South Africa Alcupoem who hooked them up with a certain guy who owned a recording studio in Durban. Once again, it did not work out. Nyakanyaka then went back to school to study a one-year course of Sales and Marketing at the Durban University of Technology through a learnership.
There after, he reluctantly quit music and worked for a fashion retailer.
In 2006, Fundile once again emerged and convinced Nyakanyaka to come back to music. After a thorough persuasion, Nyakanyaka succumbed and joined Fundile, Sosha, Mdu to form another kwaito group called Footprint. Eugine "Alcupoem" Mpulo helped them to clinch a recording deal with a Hugh Masekela's recording company Chessa.
The Footprint released their breakthrough hits Singaphandle.
Although it achieved great success and was widely seen to be at kwaito's forefront, Nyakanyaka decided to go solo. He says he does not like hardcore kwaito style, because of its lack of a message and tendency to focus on dancing and pleasure rather than on the plethora of social problems that exist in South Africa.
Nyakanyaka is evidently impacting the South African scene with her debut album (released through Eyedears label) titled Sonke. This album announces an arrival of substantial new talent on the country's dance music scene.
He has roped in most of sought-after producers like Alcupoem, Mondli Ngcobo of M World, Fundile Mdingi ,Lindelani Mkhize of Joyous Celebration fame and evegreen sound-engineer Dave Segal who used to worked with the late South African king of reggae Lucky Dube. This 13 tracks CD boasts a long line-up of talented musicians such as Sosha,Langs, Ladiva and Qpeedo to mention but a few.
It draws together his singing, perfoming and songwriting gifts into one immensely lovable package that will find a place with an ever-expanding base of quality music lovers who will respond with enthusiasm to his astonishingly sophisticated sound that yet always remain grounded in Durban's soil.
It is jam-packed with vibey hip-shake inducing house jams and also has a crossover appeal in it with fresh sound that makes it an exciting and vibrant album. It features gems like Woza and Uyinjabulo Yami. He has an ability to perform and dominates stage with the ease of an individual born to entertain. His way with a song on a live stage was first evident on music competition where the singer and his friends made it into the top two and during his performance, earned a devoted network of fans drawn to Nyakanyaka's magic.
He also features in Msawawa's song Ushay'Irobhothi and Ntokozo's video of her latest hit Hello. He wrote lyrics for DJ Sox's hit Sasho. Nyakanyaka has shared a stage with renowned musicians such as Boom Shaka, Sandy B, Tzozo en Professor, Lvovo Derrango, Thebe, to mention but a few.
